A Cinematic Journey Through Ascaya: A Short Film, Narrated by Melissa Tomastik
There’s a moment, somewhere along your climb up as you drive into the McCullough Range, when the valley below goes quiet. The light shifts, the air cools, and you can feel that the elevation has shifted.
That moment marks the beginning of this film.
A Journey Through Ascaya is a short cinematic work narrated by our director of sales, Melissa Tomastik. It moves the way the land does, gradually, unhurried, and completely in tune with its surroundings. The McCullough Range rises in layers of rock, canyon, and sky, and from this elevation, the city below recedes into something closer to weather. From up here, you can see further and feel your distance from everything below.
The film traces the architecture that has emerged at Ascaya over the past decade. A contemporary desert vocabulary crafted one home at a time, each shaped by the land it’s sited on. Homes that open outward to the horizon. A point of view that’s grown more distinct with time, as design should always respond to the land, not impose upon it. Desert Design Study Homes, Ascaya’s ongoing collaboration with leading architects, threads through the work. Each home has a different answer to the same question: What can desert living be?
The community itself comes into view alongside the architecture. Miles of private trails through canyon passes and out to open ridgelines, a family park where unplanned afternoons unfold and relax, and a clubhouse that functions as an extension of home, offering morning coffee, lunch overlooking the valley, and a social gathering point for each evening.
Then there’s The Canyon Residences. The only repeated homes at Ascaya are an anomaly within a place otherwise defined by one-of-one architecture. Designed and built by Blue Heron, these jewel boxes unfold across seven terraces carved into the canyon wall. Each residence offers a resort-style lock-and-leave experience, held to the same desert modern standard that’s shaped Ascaya from the beginning. Clean lines. Natural materials. A connection to the land that begins at each doorway’s threshold. Here, wellbeing is a cornerstone of daily life, from a pool deck that opens to the valley, to yoga terraces, to saunas and cold plunges, to a fitness studio.
At Ascaya, there is more than one way to live. You can find a home already designed. You can build something entirely your own. What stays with you is something else. Press play below to watch.
